Redware Decorative Brick
Ontario, circa 1900
A small redware clay brick used in a fund raising campaign for the Hamilton Children’s Hospital.
Over a period of five years, Miss Jeanette Lewis, a wealthy Hamiltonian, attempted to raise enough money
to establish a children’s hospital in Hamilton. In 1907, she began fundraising by selling bricks for one
dollar and gained support of women’s clubs, such as the Y.W.C.A. as well as the greater public. Although
unsuccessful in her quest, two children wards were instituted in other hospitals as a result of her actions.
